U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Dan Choi chained himself to the White House fence in repeal of DADT. Story: http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/03/18/Dan_Choi_Protests_in_Front_of_WH/Lt.'s site: http://www.ltdanchoi.com/index.html
An ex-Sailor, who was dishcahrged for being gay and was my broadcasting instructor in 2003 and is a friend of mine said this: Why am I even going here...? Oh well, deep breath and...
The White House chained-to-the-fence stunt was more than an act of civil disobedience, it was a direct violation of the UCMJ (conduct unbecoming a United States Officer).
Moreover - I think pulling this stunt makes Lt. Choi him look as crazy and desperate as Cindy Sheehan is now viewed; it hurts the cause when we're trying to convince the GOP and make no mistake - they ARE the ones we're trying to win over. The Dems are already (mostly) on our side.
The lesson Lt. Choi? Know your enemy. That's a basic tenet of war and it applies here. GOP lawmakers don't respond to people in uniform making a scene. It's poor judgment and ups your risk of being court-martialed.
So, Lt. Choi - Regardless of what the outcome of your discharge proceedings may be - you are still a part of the uniformed service and you violated the UCMJ by protesting in uniform. As a DADT Vet, the whole thing seems sad to me. I hope you feel like you've accomplished something. It's unfortunate that I can't support your actions, but I wish you all the best..I do not understand what he feels. However, he does not need to make a scene while in uniform. He is still a uniform-wearing member of the forces and represents the Army and other services as a commissioned officer. Bold action? Yes. Best action? Nowhere near.

I totally understand what your friend means. I personally think "artsy" protest actions like that are cool and might be good at winning over neutrals and liberals, but if they're trying to win over Republicans, they have to remember that Republicans hate hippies and they like serious people who work and wear suits.

I think you put your point across beautifully, Kati. I agree with both your post and Erick's friend. However, I'd like to add - if it's vaguely relevant - that I'm personally against gay pride for reasons that I like to believe are related to how your friend feels, Erick.
I very much agree with LGBT rights (I'd never have started this thread otherwise!!), but I think that asking for acceptance from the conservative, vanilla crowd while half-naked and dressed up as a fairy isn't the best way to go about it. [Yes, I'm aware I'm stereotyping here]. I also believe grabbing your partner by the bum/balls and snogging them publicly is inappropriate regardless of orientation.
However, I realise that gay prides can be fun, mean you can really let your hair down, as well as be involved in several good causes.
Apologies if this is sloppy, BTW

The Prop 8 repeal has failed to gather enough votes to make it onto the November ballot. Sadness...

Very sad indeed. I'm surprised that they were unable to gather more signatures.
As an aside, Day of Silence is this Friday. Is anyone else participating?

I will be. We are doing a week long event on my campus. We are actually doing Day of Silence on Wednesday because no one is actually on campus Fridays. So Day of Silence Wednesday, Rave in our campus courtyard Friday.

^ That sounds like an awesome time. This is the first year the GSA will be promoting Day of Silence, instead of it just being individuals who decide to participate on their own. I'm anxiously waiting to see how it turns out, as our advisor is... less than throwing herself into any of the GSA goings on lately. I'm determined to make it successful though, as watching our bake sale fundraising efforts flatline was fairly depressing.

Probably not participating this year. I feel like I've made my point in my own community and succeeded at raising awareness and tolerance like I wanted to. I'm not sure it'd make that much of an impact for myself. But I am a big supporter of this event and will continue to root on those that do participate!

Quite a few friends and I are doing Day of Silence. I have to ask my mom to get sticker paper so I can print stickers, because I'm not into the tape thing.
Also, the Faith Club (Christian club) is doing little rallies at the gazebo all week long. I bet if we sabotaged it everybody would cheer, because today they were generally considered really fucking annoying...

I seriously have a lot of respect for both anyone who goes through with the day of silence and those who openly support it. It's just a shame it's still Easter holiday over here so most people are off campus. Good luck to anyone doing it!

I'll be joining everyone when it's Friday. LOADS of people out here - kids included(!!) - wear masks over their noses and mouths due to germaphobia so I reckon I'll get one and write on it; maybe have a pacifier as well to wear under the mask.

My friend Sharee says she's going to bring masks (not common at all in America, of course). I'd be more likely to wear a mask than tape, but I probably won't wear either because my math teacher didn't seem to like the idea of my mouth being covered and wants me to remind her with a card or a sticker.

Have both and just use the mask when it's not maths? I dunno, just a thought. But good luck to everyone else articipating

I'm not taping, as I read about the adhesive being horrible to skin. Plus, duct tape smells awful. I hadn't even thought about a mask--good idea! I'm just using a sticker/card, and wearing red.
