"I AM KONG."

WWW
« on: July 08, 2010, 05:14:43 PM »

I am bolding those that I'll be rooting for.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
Lost
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Mad Men
True Blood
The Good Wife

Though I love Mad Men, season 3 was week, and Breaking Bad is revelatory. Dark, funny, visceral, harrowing - it's like if the Coen Bros got to have their way with a TV series. Beautifully filmed, amazingly written, and perfectly directed and acted. Must win.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY
Glee
Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Nurse Jackie
30 Rock
The Office

I can't stand 30 Rock, don't "get" Glee, am not big on Modern Family and still don't understand the mass appeal of The Office. I am deeply offended that the year's best offering (Community) got shafted.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Mariska Hargitay (Special Victims Unit)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
January Jones (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)

I love Betty, and mostly it's because January Jones is pitch-perfect at delivering the story of a woman frustrated by the helplessness she creates for herself. The scene where she confronts Don...chills.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)

Because there's no way I'm voting Jackface over Cranston, and Jon Hamm is good but not nearly up to the level of subtlety that defines Cranston's performance.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Lea Michele (Glee)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Toni Collette (The United States of Tara)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

Meh.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Matthew Morrison (Glee)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Tony Shalhoub (Monk)

The fact that Parsons is pretty normal in RL makes his Sheldon all the better.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Chris Colfer (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Jon Cryer (Two and A Half Men)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
Ty Burrell (Modern Family)

Meh. Where is Danny Pudi? He should be a shoe-in.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
John Slattery (Mad Men)
Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Martin Short (Damages)
Terry O’ Quinn (Lost)
Michael Emerson (Lost)
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)

Aaron Paul breaks my heart, makes me laugh and makes me want to make him chicken soup despite being a dick drug dealer. Granted, he's helped by an amazing script, but the acting in Season 2's "Peekaboo" could take this all on its own.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Sharon Gless (Burn Notice)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Rose Byrne (Damages)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)

I love Christina Hendricks, but Moss has just a little more in the way of acting.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Jane Lynch (Glee)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
Holland Taylor (Two and A Half Men)

Further meh.

OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW (COMPETITION)
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Project Runway
Top Chef

MEH WHERE IS TOOL ACADEMY.

When are the Emmys? I don't watch them, but I guess I'll be hoping that Curb Your Enthusiasm wins best comedy, even though I like the one season I've seen of 30 Rock (never seen any of the other stuff). I haven't seen season seven yet, but the extent to which I love Curb Your Enthusiasm is amazing. I recently found out that my friends find it amusing that I can reference a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode for like every social situation that anybody gets into.

I'm a bad tv fan, because the only shows nominated that I watch regularly are 30 Rock, The Office, Parks And Recreation, Monk (well, I used to before it ended), and The Big Bang Theory.  I tend to like my tv to be comedy only.

BUT IT IS RIDICULOUS that Party Down wasn't nominated for Outstanding Comedy, because that is (was) a fucking brilliant show.

The only race that I'm actually curious about is for Outstanding Variety, Music, Or Comedy Series:
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live
The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien

It would be nice to see Conan win, but to be honest it will probably be the Daily Show which is consistently funny.  I think it's cute that SNL keeps getting nominated in this category.

I don't really watch much American TV, but I think Hugh Laurie should win an award for House.
If only for the fact that he can pull off a very convincing accent.

It would be a cool statement if Conan won, you're right. I also love The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, though. I know Stephen Colbert will be making jokes about either winning or losing the Emmy for like a week after the awards.

I also only pay attention to comedy nowadays. I think the last "serious" show I watched was The Sopranos, and other than that I only really like serious shows that have been off the air for decades, like The X-Files, Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone. Did those shows win Emmys?

I'm blindly geeky in my fangrrrrl support of Mad Men. Mostly because I don't watch other non-shitty shows, guilty pleasure style.

@Disconnected: Twilight Zone won 1, Twin Peaks was nominated but didn't win, and the X-Files won a couple of awards.

Haha, thanks for doing the research for me. That's pretty cool. Twin Peaks should have won something for music and sound, unless there was something better.

Gwen: I really want to watch Mad Men and am jealous of you. Have it coming on Netflix, though.

If you feel like taking the chance, Target has seasons 1 and 2 for $25 this week, season 3 is $35.
